Covello moves in front at The Players Cup

07/16/2010 - Winnipeg, MB (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Vince Covello posted his second consecutive five-under 66 on Friday and moved in front after two rounds of The Players Cup.

Covello finished 36 holes at 10-under 132 and is three strokes ahead at Pine Ridge Golf Club.

First-round leader Aaron Goldberg carded a one-under 70 in round two and fell to second at minus-seven.

Brady Stockton (70) and Jose de Jesus Rodriguez (66) are knotted in third place at six-under 136.

Covello began on the 10th tee Friday and broke into red figures right away with a birdie at 10. He added another birdie at the par-five 12th, but that was the last positive for some time.

Covello, 27, parred his next six holes, but bogeyed back-to-back holes at one and two. He atoned for the miscues with four consecutive birdies from the third, starting with a 20-footer at No. 3, to reach nine-under par.

"That (birdie on three) really got me going," acknowledged Covello. "You just have to keep going, you never know what's going to happen. It's a great track and there are birdie chances out there. You just have to take advantage of them."

He got to 10-under par at the par-five eighth. Covello, who finished third earlier this year, birdied the hole and will take a three-shot lead into the weekend in search of his first win on the Canadian Tour.

"My game has been pretty good, but I've just had a tough time putting it all together," he said. "You need to keep a good attitude when you're trying to get out of a funk, which I've done. I'm just trying to limit my mistakes."

Brock Mackenzie (71), Danny Sahl (68), Alan McLean (68), Richard Lee (66) and Johnny Bloomfield (71) are knotted in fifth place at five-under 137.

NOTES: Mackenzie tops the tour's money list...2009 champion Graham DeLaet is playing on the PGA Tour this season...The 36-hole cut fell at two-over 144 and Andy Matthews, who won this year's Mexican PGA Championship, made it on the number.

Kansas City, MO - Kansas City has not officially named Matt Cassel its starting quarterback, but there can be no doubt now.

After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Patriots made him their franchise player, meaning his salary for this season will be about $15 million.
New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."

Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who had been Bill Belichick's assistant in New England, engineered the trade after the Patriots became convinced that Brady would recover fully from his knee operation.
"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," Pioli said. "His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
